Mariya Palanjian's interviews: Dr Morgana McCabe Allan
As a child, Fife based Dr Morgana McCabe Allan missed six years of her education due to life-threatening allergies and disordered eating. Her frequent absences from school made her look at the world around her completely differently to her peers.
Every time she would return to the classroom after weeks away, she would find everything had changed and it was like entering a parallel universe. And after trying and failing to adapt so she could fit back in with her friends, she realised she needed to focus on simply being herself no matter what was going on around her.
This childhood experience inspired Morgana to complete an interdisciplinary Ph.D looking at how our sense of identity and reality is influenced by people, places, things, ideas and emotions. The 40-year-old from Fife has now written a book, published today, called Unbecoming: the unorthodox guide to radical wholeness which also hit No 1 bestseller.
The book looks at how every thought we have is a result of the world we live in, the people we know, the experiences we have lived and the social constructs we exist alongside. She argues that to achieve true success and happiness, we must first break free of the patterns we’ve always followed and learn to love and trust ourselves.
Morgana can talk about how her frequent periods of ill health actually ended up being the best thing that could have happened to her. She can explain what unbecoming really is and how it can help people fulfil their true potential.
