Part (2)
Armenian Assembly of America Radio Hour host Mihran Toumajan had the pleasure of having Ms. Mariam Khaloyan to provide an update on pending pro- and anti-Armenian legislation in the halls of Congress, approved in July 2020 by the U.S. House of Representatives and now on its way to the joint Senate-House Conference.
Khaloyan also sheds light on the Assembly’s partnership with Ms. Katya Hovnanian Alexanian, the founder and president of the Armenia-based United Student Council NGO, who has spearheaded humanitarian relief efforts for the people of Lebanon in the wake of the horrific August 2020 explosion.
By way of background, Mariam Khaloyan serves as the Director of Congressional Relations at the Washington, DC-based nationwide, nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization founded in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America. In her capacity as Congressional Relations Director, she has worked effectively to help increase the membership of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues, and advocate for the passage of the U.S. House of Representatives (H.Res.296) and U.S. Senate (S.Res.150) resolutions affirming the United States’ record on the Armenian Genocide. Ms. Khaloyan works diligently with Congressional appropriators to secure funds for Armenia and Artsakh, encourage democratic reforms and economic development in Armenia, and continue de-mining efforts in Artsakh and the greater region. Notably, she spearheaded the Assembly’s 2018 and 2019 National Advocacy Conferences, which attracted the attendance of Armenian Americans from across the United States and featured hundreds of meetings each year with Members of Congress and staff on Capitol Hill. Mariam Khaloyan is a seasoned staff member at the Assembly, having served as the Terjenian-Thomas Assembly Internship Program’s Coordinator in 2016, in addition to working as a research intern with the Assembly’s sister organization, the Armenian National Institute, in 2015. Prior to joining the Assembly, she worked as a consultant for the Armenian American Wellness Center, an humanitarian project of the Armenian American Cultural Association, Inc., which provides high-quality healthcare services to women in Armenia. Mariam Khaloyan graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Industrial Organizational Psychology.
